Good Morning!

Hope you had a great first full week of the new year. Before we get into the news, a quick note. We have new small cap stock alerts coming soon, so keep an eye on your inbox.

Now let’s look at what happened in the market this past week and what investors are watching next.

Market Recap

The market saw more activity this week as normal trading volume returned after the holidays. Stocks moved back and forth, but major indexes finished the week close to where they started.

Early in the week, stocks pushed higher after the latest inflation data showed continued cooling in price pressures. That report helped reinforce expectations that interest rates may move lower later this year.

Midweek, markets pulled back after a stronger jobs report showed steady hiring and wage growth. Bond yields moved higher on the news, which briefly pressured technology and other rate sensitive stocks.

By Friday, markets steadied again. Investors appeared comfortable with the idea that the economy remains firm but is no longer overheating. That balance helped keep the overall tone constructive.

Technology stocks were mixed. Chip and AI related names paused after strong late December runs, while software and cloud related stocks held up better as investors focused on longer term growth trends.

Small cap stocks had a positive week. The Russell 2000 moved higher and outperformed some larger indexes. This early year strength often reflects renewed risk appetite and growing interest in underfollowed companies.

Overall, the market showed healthy action, which is common early in the year as investors adjust positioning and set priorities for the months ahead.

What’s Coming Next Week

Next week brings several clear catalysts beyond routine data.

Earnings season begins with major banks reporting results. Their commentary on loan demand, credit quality, and consumer activity often sets the tone for the broader earnings season.

New inflation data is also scheduled for release. Investors will watch closely to see if price pressures continue easing or show signs of leveling off.

Markets will also listen for fresh commentary from Federal Reserve officials. Any insight into how policymakers view recent data could influence rate expectations.

Sector rotation will remain a focus. Early year trading often reveals where investors are committing capital for the rest of the year.
